Get Better at Guessing Songs from Short Clips

Listen for timbre, rhythm and melody before asking for a longer clip.

A short clip carries different information

At a tenth of a second you may hear only an attack: the beginning of a drum, chord or syllable. A wrong guess at that length does not mean you do not know the song. More audio adds rhythm, pitch movement and words.

Separate recognition from recall

You might recognize a recording without recalling its name. Try the artist, the chorus or the album in your own memory before searching. Use the live game’s autocomplete to narrow possibilities when available.

Practice with a controlled set

Use the same group of melodies more than once and gradually reduce the clip length. Our independent Melody Match offers twelve public-domain compositions. Its synthesized sound isolates the tune, whereas commercial song games also test production and vocal recognition.

Take a useful clue

Extend once, listen carefully and decide. More time spent on random guesses can be less useful than one longer sample. Save the full reveal for after your own attempt if you want to preserve the challenge.
